It is the 5th National Museum in Japan open since January 2007. The architect of the museum was Kisho kurokawa.

For visitors who use magnetic induction loop (telecoil) hearing aids, Auditorium on the third floor is equipped with induction loop systems, which may be used by visitors with corresponding hearing aids at any time, such as during a lecture. 10 induction loop receivers are available free of charge.
