ASAKUSA

Having "Senso-ji" temple as its central figure, Asakusa is a temple town and as such has prospered for centuries. Even now, it still has the feelings of Old Edo. Asakusa is a very popular place for tourists to find and feel Japanese traditional culture. Throughout the year, there are lots of events such as the Sanja-matsuri festival in the middle of May, the Sumidagawa fireworks festival in July and Shirasagi-no-mai (the White Crane Dance) in November.

Tourist Attractions

  1. "Senso-ji" temple and "Nakamise"

A short distance from the station, you can see the magnificent "Kaminarimon" gate on the right side of the Kaminarimon-dori street. There is one step at the gate, but if you detour around the side of the gate, there is no step. After going through the gate, you will be on "Nakamise-dori" street, and find various shops with all kinds of Japanese traditional souvenirs such as Sensu (fans). "Nakamise-dori" is flat and stone-paved, so, it will be easy going. It leads you to "Senso-ji" temple. The temple grounds are stone-paved with some graveled walkways, but is isn't a problem for wheelchair users. However, in order to get into the main hall of the temple, there are steps.

  2. "Kappabashi"

From Asakusa Station, passing in front of "Kaminarimon" gate, go straight along the road, you will reach the "Kappabashi" shopping area. There are many shops which deal in cooking utensils and kitchen items along both sides of the road for about 800 meters. The road in this area is flat, wide and paved. Although the road in the area is wide and flat, it can become narrow because of many obstacles such as sales items displayed in front of shops, and parked bicycles. Also, many small shops have narrow entrances and small aisles inside.
