Selected Area Guide
GINZA

Ginza was one of the earliest areas in Japan to become Westernized. Though it was originally selected as the area for building the Tokugawa Shogun's own silver foundry (this is the reason to be named "Ginza"), the area turned into the most famous shopping area in Japan in the late 19th Century. Now there are lots of famous department stores, specialty stores, and theaters around the intersection of Chuo-Dori and Harumi-Dori streets ; and Ginza bustles with pedestrian traffic throughout the year.

Accessibility of the Area

  • Almost all the entrances of big buildings along the main, wide streets such as Chuo Dori street are the same level as the streets. Because the whole area is very flat, it is generally easy to move about. As Ginza's streets are laid out in a gridiron pattern, you can easily find the places you want to go. However, if you turn off the main streets you may find the very narrow side streets a bit more difficult to use. Automobiles are banned from Chuo Dori street on Sundays and holidays - so it is easy to get around, despite the large number of pedestrians.
