SHINJUKU EAST

The surroundings of JR Shinjuku Station are one of the busiest areas in Tokyo, where numerous office buildings, banks as well as the city's administrative offices are located.
Particularly on the west side of the station, many skyscrapers, including Tokyo Tocho (city hall) stand side by side with department stores, restaurants, museums, cinemas, theaters and miscellaneous shops. This makes Shinjuku one of the busiest amusement places in Tokyo.
Underground shopping malls, centered on JR Shinjuku Station, spread widely and extend their underground passageways in many directions. Most passageways to or from these malls have stairways, so we recommend that you learn the locations of elevators beforehand and use them. The underground malls of Higashi-Shinjuku (Yasukuni-dori avenue and Shinjuku- dori avenue) and Nishi-Shinjuku (Chuo-dori avenue) are extremely useful for getting around on rainy or hot days.

Accessibility of the Area

  • Most streets are flat, but the street from JR Shinjuku south exit to Koshyu-kaido street has a slight downward slope. When you go east, you can use the public elevator in front of the south exit wicket of the JR station, so that you won't need to go down that slope. Almost no braille blocks are on the streets around the station, but they do exist inside the station building. Also in the entertainment area, things like free standing signboards on the sidewalks may obstruct your passage.

Tourist Attractions

Higashi (east) Shinjuku Area

  • Route 1: JR Shinjuku Station west exit and Chuo east exit to the ground floor.

Go out the wicket, use elevator 4 or 5 to the ground floor. When they are not in use, ask the station staff to use a JR elevator. For access from the ground floor to the wicket during non-operating hours, visit the station office located next to the Information Center which is in the middle of MY CITY 1F (station building) and ask to use a JR elevator.

  • Route 2: Subway Marunouchi-line Shinjuku Station form the ground floor.

Go to JR Shinjuku Station west gate and use elevator 5 near the wicket (underground 2F).

Go to JR Shinjuku Station east exit and use elevator 3 in Odakyu department store. If the elevator is not operating (See elevator Information), it is impossible to go from the ground floor to Subway Marunouchi-line Shinjuku Station wicket without assistance for descending the stairs.

  • COURSE 5: To Shinjuku 3-chome area and Shinjuku Gyoen park (from Shinjuku Station east exit)

Follow Route 1 or Route 2 to the ground floor.
Go left (north) and you come to Shinjuku-dori Avenue (p5). In this area branch shops of camera and electronics discount stores in the west exit zone are plentiful.
As Shinjuku Street is always crowded with people, movement is pretty difficult for wheelchair users and blind persons. Go right (east) on Shinjuku-dori Avenue, you will find department stores.
Marui, Mitsukoshi and Isetan. Miscellaneous shops are nearby, but most are not well-equipped to accept disabled persons.
Go further east to Shinjuku Gyoen-mae Station of the Marunouchi-line (p6), then turn right, you will reach the north entrance of Shinjuku Gyoen Park.

  • COURSE 6: To Kabuki-cho Area

Follow Route 5 or Route 6 to the ground floor.
Go left (north) and you will find Shinjuku-dori Avenue(p5). Cross Shinjuku-dori Avenue, go further north and you will find Yasukuni-dori Avenue.
Again, cross Yasukuni-dori Avenue, you will now be in Kabuki-cho, but facilities in most shops are not well-equipped to accept disabled persons.

  • COURSE 7: To Shinjuku Gyoen Park (from JR Shinjuku south exit)

From Shinjuku Station south exit, go left along Koshyu Kaido Avenue.
This road is steep for a while, then becomes flat. If you use public elevator 7, you won't need to descend the slope. Go across the crossing (7), keep going straight, then you will reach Shinjuku-Gyoen Park's north gate.
