The surroundings of JR Shinjuku Station are one of the busiest
areas in Tokyo, where numerous office buildings, banks as well
as the city's administrative offices are located.
Particularly on the west side of the station, many skyscrapers,
including Tokyo Tocho (city hall) stand side by side with department
stores, restaurants, museums, cinemas, theaters and miscellaneous
shops. This makes Shinjuku one of the busiest amusement places
in Tokyo.
Underground shopping malls, centered on JR Shinjuku Station,
spread widely and extend their underground passageways in many
directions. Most passageways to or from these malls have stairways,
so we recommend that you learn the locations of elevators beforehand
and use them. The underground malls of Higashi-Shinjuku (Yasukuni-dori
avenue and Shinjuku- dori avenue) and Nishi-Shinjuku (Chuo-dori
avenue) are extremely useful for getting around on rainy or
hot days.

- Most streets are flat, but the street from JR Shinjuku
south exit to Koshyu-kaido street has a slight downward
slope. When you go east, you can use the public elevator
in front of the south exit wicket of the JR station, so
that you won't need to go down that slope. Almost no braille
blocks are on the streets around the station, but they do
exist inside the station building. Also in the entertainment
area, things like free standing signboards on the sidewalks
may obstruct your passage.
