Ueno, a historic spot, developed from a town built originally in front
of "Kaneiji Temple". It is now famous as the gateway to the capital
from northern Japan.
The heart of the town is "Ueno Park" which houses science and art
museums, a zoo and other cultural attractions in a natural environment,
and also is a popular spot for cherry blossom viewing in the spring.
Also there is the Ameyoko shopping district, where many small shops
are lined up the elevated railroad travels between the overpass from
JR Ueno Station and JR Okachimachi Station. It is well known as a
place for good bargains.

| Accessibility of
the Area |
|
- The roads are paved, wide and level. It is a short distance
from the station to sight-seeing spots, most areas are accessible,
but you should avoid the long steep slope which links the Shinobazu
exit and Koen exits of JR Ueno station.

Ueno Park and Shinobazu Pond
Popular Sight-seeing
Ueno Park is accessible from the Keisei Ueno Station exit. This
is a short distance from the Shinobazu exit of JR Ueno Station.
After that, go straight, you'll see a big fountain. The Tokyo
Metropolitan Festival Hall, and National Museum of Western Art
are to its right. The National Science Museum and Tokyo National
Museum are behind it. Ueno Zoo and the Tokyo Metropolitan Art
Museum are on its left.
The sight where a bronze statue of Saigo is located is quite high
so that you can enjoy an extensive view but there is a step stairway
from Keisei Ueno Station. Therefore, we recommend that you get
there by making a turn to the right before the big fountain and
going through the Ueno Royal Museum.
Shinobazu Pond is accessible from the Bentendo area. Or, you can
also turn around the corner of Shitamachi Museum. These routes
are paved and level.
At the Koen exit of JR Ueno Station there are three steps after
going out of the ticket gate and an incline which is rather steep.
However, the park entrance is very flat and accessible.
Please refer to pages for detailed guide of Museums and the Zoo.

Ameyoko (Ameya Yokocho)
The Ameyoko shopping district started in the black market after
World War II. There are many bargains to be had in the tiny shops
from foodstuffs to clothes. The area is accessible from the Shinobazu
exit of JR Ueno Station, the Hirokoji exit of JR Ueno station
or the subway station Ueno exit. The road is paved and level.
Since it is crowded on the weekend, especially Sundays, it is
recommended that you visit Ameyoko on weekdays. Since many small
shops have narrow entranced small aisles inside, we recommend
you to visit to "Ameyoko Center Building".
