Making Phone Call

Most public telephones in Tokyo are green and gray phones which accept both 10 yen and 100 yen coins or telephone card (prepaid cards which are available in various denominations from vending machines, hotels and kiosks in train stations)
Public telephone booths for disabled persons can be found in the public facilities and streets of Tokyo. Such telephones booths are usually wide and easy to open. The telephones are installed at a lower height. There are also some phones in which one can adjust the volume .

How to Use a Public Phone
  1. Pick up the receiver and insert your telephone card or coin.
  2. After hearing a dial tone, dial the number.
  3. For phone cards you can see the number of points left on your card on the digital display on the phone.
  4. You will hear a loud beep signaling when your last 10 yen has begun to be used. If you insert more coins or another telephone card you can continue to talk.
  5. When100 yen coins are used, change will not be given.
  6. When you make a call outside of central Tokyo, dial the domestic area code (domestic area codes always start with zero) and then the number you want.
  7. The charge for a local call from a public phone in central Tokyo is 10 yen per minute.
International Calls

International calls can be made from public phones which are identified as international telephones by using 100 yen coins or telephone card. To make an international call, dial a long distance access number, the country code and the number that you want. The access numbers of the different carriers are 001 (KDD), 0041 (JT), 0061 (IDC) and 0033(NTT COMMUNICATIONS). The rates charged by these carriers vary. Direct calls are 40% less expensive from 23:00 until 8:00 regardless of the carrier. You can place person to person calls, collect calls and credit card calls only through KDD by dialing 0051 from anywhere in Japan. If you need directory assistance from a foreign country, dial 0057. Such directory assistance is free.

When you use 1,000 yen cards (this card is actually valued at 1,050 yen), your call is charged per 100 yen unit and points of 50 yen are always left on the card.
If you buy a "Super World Card" issued by KDD which can be bought at its office or Seven-Eleven stores, you can use it even at green public phones which are not international phones for making international calls. Home Country Direct Service is available from any public phone. This service will let you get in touch with an operator in your home country and place a credit card or collect telephone call. See the numbers listed below.
